Notes on electric VS glow power

Electric planes on high performance outrunners often perform a lot better in practice than their power output would suggest.

1) Electric planes are usually lighter than glow. The whole lipo/motor setup probably weighs about half of just a glow engine alone, not even counting fuel. This reduces wing loadings, and makes it easier to achieve high G turns as well as unlimited vertical.
2) Manufacturer quoted horsepower ratings are commonly regarded as pie in the sky. They are done at extremely high revs after precision tuning and probably run on special fuel.
3) Outrunners are usually propped with large diameter props. This makes them have excellent acceleration and static thrust, although top speed may lack a bit.
4) An electric motor ALWAYS runs at it's rated capacity. Glow motors can lean out in flight, be set to rich, be overpropped and have power curves which have to be in the middle to get the best out of it.

Now most electric planes in general share these advantage over glow planes. That's why you can get away with theoretically less power.
