This is part of a series of articles put here, written by me to try and explain electic flight to a newcomer. These articles are taken from the spad combat forum in the electric section.

Basic terminology

Ok. These basic items of equipment are the same for any electric setup, be it Ni-Cd/Mh, lipo, brushed or brushless.

Batteries, speed control, motor, receiver and servos. This bit is only slightly different from most normal glow setups.

Battery---Speed control-------Motor

                  Receiver---servos

As you can probably tell, the main flight battery supplies power to everything. The speed control normally has something called a BEC in it, which converts whatever the main battery voltage is, into five volts for the receiver to work. This is good because it means EVERYTHING runs off the same battery. The power is supplied via the red/black wires that accompany the throttle plug when the speed control is plugged into the RX.

The speed control is basically your throttle servo - it regulates power to the motor, taking it's input from the throttle output on the RX. Of course, you can use a separate flight battery if you want to, by cutting the red and black wires on the throttle connection, and plugging in a different battery.

That is a basic leccy set up. Of course, it can get more complicated, with additional, separate BECs to support more servos, or dual motors, but mostly it says pretty simple. There, that wasn't so hard now was it?
